Biography

Dr. Eric Bernstein is the founding physician and Medical Director of San Antonio Family Physicians. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, and has been in practice since 1999 treating patients of all ages, from newborns to older adults. He is an Associate Professor of Community and Family Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio. Dr. Bernstein graduated from The University of Southern California (1990) and The Chicago Medical School (1996), where he earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree and also earned a Master of Science Degree in Applied Physiology. He then completed his residency training in Family Medicine at the renowned RUSH University Medical Center in Chicago. He has a focus in Allergy and has pioneered the use of Allergy Drops (Sublingual Immunotherapy) in South Texas with great success. Dr. Bernstein is fluent in Spanish.

Dr. Bernstein previously practiced medicine in Chicago, Illinois, where he served as Medical Director of The Family Health Center of Wicker Park and Medical Director of Centro Medico Michael Reese Hospital.

Dr. Bernstein always encourages two-way communication between doctors and patients. He believes this is critical in providing exceptional medical care. Whether discussing healthy life choices or treating an illness, Dr. Bernstein feels that he and the patient are a team, both involved in creating and implementing a successful plan. He prides himself on providing clinical excellence for complete patient satisfaction and appreciates patient feedback. Patients regularly comment on Dr. Bernstein’s approachable style, compassion and his ability to relay complicated medical information clearly.

Dr. Bernstein was a volunteer member of Chicago’s South Suburban Emergency Response Team (SSERT) where he participated for eight years as a SWAT team physician. He maintains a special interest in training medical, law enforcement and first responders in Medical Counterterrorism, Weapons of Mass Destruction and Less Lethal Munitions.

Always striving to provide his patients with the latest and most effective treatments, Dr. Bernstein is constantly looking to incorporate the use of technological advancements to improve patient communication and care. He believes technology to be an effective resource in patient care.

Dr. Bernstein is looking to provide an all-inclusive medical home for every patient, going above and beyond the limitations of primary care. He stresses the importance of a “patient-centered medical home,” and believes patient care should not be limited to primary care, but include all aspects of the patient’s health and treatment. San Antonio Family Physicians provides patients with the maximum care available within one central office.

Personal Interests

Dr. Bernstein grew up in Great Neck, New York. He enjoys tennis, skiing, biking, hiking, and travel. He lives in San Antonio with his wife Sue and has three children.
